Album In A Room Available At Best Buy and iTunes
Columbia Nashville’s Jordyn Shellhart will help raise money for The Diabetes Friendly Foundation (DFF) when she performs at their inaugural “K9s for Kids” Benefit on November 13, 2010 in Dallas, TX. The benefit will help build awareness about Diabetic Alert Dogs as well as raise money for the cause. Dogs have long been used by law enforcement and the military to sniff out drugs and bombs, but are now being trained to detect high and low blood sugar levels in their handlers. The “K-9 for Kids” program provides assistance in locating Diabetic Alert Dogs while also providing funding for the training and placement of the animals for families in need.
The 16-year old singer-songwriter has a personal connection to the cause and understands the strain that the disease can put on families – in 2007, Jordyn’s older brother Taylor passed away at age 21 of undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes. Shellhart’s tragedy inspired her to write “Heaven Knows,” a poignant song that resonates with anyone who has lost a loved one. “Heaven Knows” appears on her debut album, In A Room, which is available at Best Buy and iTunes.
“It's almost unbelievable what the DFF is doing for families affected by diabetes. In helping them get these dogs, they are changing lives and it's awesome,” Jordyn says. “I'm so glad I get to be a part of this event and see firsthand the difference the DFF is making.”
Every 24 hours, 4,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with diabetes according to the Center for Disease Control. Parents of children with diabetes constantly have to check their child’s blood sugar throughout the day and night in order to prevent severe consequences caused by fluctuating blood sugar levels. With a Diabetes Alert Dog, much of the strain and fear of these dangerous side effects of diabetes is lifted.
Attendance at the “K9s for Kids” Benefit is limited; ticket prices are $125 and can be purchased on line at www.diabetesfriendly.org or by calling 214-559-7176.
